Extreme Sports & Outdoor Adventures Near Sofia

Most people don't come to Sofia expecting an adrenaline trip. They come for the history, the food, the cheap beer. You probably don't suspect that you can bungee jump inside a cave an hour and a half from the city center, or fly above fields on a jetpack strapped to a jet of water. Now that you know, it's time to rethink your Sofia weekend!

We've curated the most thrilling experiences accessible to a tourist visiting Sofia, and we know, because we've done them ourselves. Some of these things, you really can't do anywhere else. Everything below is within a day trip from Sofia. None of it requires experience. All of it we've personally coordinated for guests. Most importantly, we offer transport with an English-speaking driver to and from every service! Just hop in, enjoy, hop out!

Bungee Jump from Prohodna Cave – The Eyes of God

110 km from Sofia — about 90 minutes by car

We're starting with something straight out of Indiana Jones.

Prohodna is a natural cave with two enormous openings in the ceiling that let light through in two oval beams. Locals call them the Eyes of God. The jump itself happens inside the cave - you're suspended from a platform above the cave floor, 45–110 kg weight limit, minimum age 16.

It's a short experience, 10-15 minutes from briefing to jump. But the setting is unlike any bungee location we know of elsewhere in Europe. You're not jumping off a bridge over a motorway. You're jumping inside a mountain while light falls through stone eyes above you. Most people barely catch their breath after the jump, and the first thing that comes out of their mouth is along the lines of "Oh God, can I go again?"

Tandem option available if you want company on the way down.

Weight: 45-110 kg | Age: 16+ (under 18 needs a parent present) | Season: Year-round, weather dependent

Bungee Jump from a Hot Air Balloon

30 minutes from Sofia

This one is harder to explain to people before they do it. You go up in a hot air balloon - open fields, Stara Planina in the distance, the kind of view that makes you forget what you signed up for. You enjoy the scenery for a while, maybe peek down at the fields below (it really looks like a painting)… And just as your heart settles… It's time to jump from the basket.

Just the beauty of nature around you, the sunrise, wind and the creak of the balloon, and then you hop. It's as beautiful as it is thrilling, and every person goes up awed, but comes down grinning.

Rated 10/10 by guests consistently. We believe it.

Hot Air Balloon Flight near Sofia

30 minutes from Sofia

Same balloon, different experience - this one is for those who want the view without the leap. Thirty minutes of free flight above open fields and Stara Planina at sunrise, with a certified pilot and up to 10 people per flight. You even get to steer for a bit. The 4K camera comes along too.

If you're traveling with someone who draws the line at jumping out of things, this is the perfect compromise - one of you jumps, one of you floats. Both come back with the same look on their face.

Season: Year-round | Max weight: 115 kg | Up to 10 people per flight

Motor Paragliding near Sofia

30 minutes from Sofia

A tandem motorized paraglider takes off from Novi Iskar and carries you over the Iskar River, the village of Katina, and the southern slopes of Stara Planina. You're flying between 400 and 1,000 meters, which is high enough to feel genuinely airborne but low enough to actually see what's below you.

Flight duration is 7-12 minutes, with an extended option available. Good for people who want something airborne but prefer a gentler entry than jumping out of a balloon.

Weight: 30-120 kg | Children 7+ with parental consent | 4K video included

Flyboard & Jetpack on Water

Near Sofia — Iskar Dam area

This is probably our most sci-fi pick. Ever wanted to feel like a Bond villain in the middle of a heist?

Jetpacks are real, apparently! A hydroflight rig shoots water through boots or a backpack at enough pressure to lift a person several meters off the surface. The first minute you spend mostly falling back in. After that something clicks and you start to control it. It's like a bike, just way cooler. The jetpack is hands-free, which sounds simpler but isn't. Instructors are in the water with you the whole time (which ensures both absolute safety and a pinch of embarrassment...). No prior experience needed, which is genuinely true here, not the usual disclaimer. By the end, you'll probably have mastered it.

This is a great option if you want something active but not the kind of active that involves heights.

Gyrocopter Flight near Sofia

If you ever watched a documentary about NASA pilots flying bizarre experimental aircraft prototypes and thought "damn, I bet I could do that, too" - this is the one for you. A gyrocopter is not a helicopter and not a small plane - it's an open two-seat aircraft with a rotor that autorotates freely and a small engine pushing from behind. Lower and slower than a plane, which means you actually see what's below you. Scenic flight over the Sofia valley and surrounding mountains.

Good for people who want something airborne but prefer not to jump out of it (for once).

Rafting on Struma River

About 90 minutes from Sofia

The Struma runs through a gorge south of Sofia and has enough current to make it interesting without being dangerous for first-timers. The route takes around 2-3 hours on the water, through canyon walls and past sections where you're moving fast enough that you need to pay attention.

Our favorite thing about this service is that it's great for groups. When you have to row down a river with your friends, you really see why the term "pirate democracy" came to be. Works as a full day out - drive down in the morning (or just ask us to drive you!), raft, eat, drive back. People who do this on stag weekends tend to rate it as the best part of the trip, which is saying something given what else is on the list.

All equipment included. No experience needed.

Canyoning near Sofia – Vlahi River

About 90 minutes from Sofia

Available June-October only, which makes it the right call if you're visiting in summer and want a full day in the mountains. The Vlahi River gorge means sliding through natural rock channels, jumping into pools, and hiking through canyon walls - with certified instructors and all gear included. Duration around 3-4 hours.

The kind of thing that looks terrifying in photos and turns out to be the most fun you've had since you were twelve.

Season: June-October | Duration: 3- hours | Children welcome with adults

ATV Off-Road & Electric Motorbike

Near Sofia — Vitosha area

Two different options depending on how you want to spend the energy. The ATV routes go through off-road terrain around Vitosha - mud, hills, forest tracks. The electric motorbike version covers similar ground but quieter, which sounds like a downgrade until you're actually on one. This is another great option to do with friends - just please don't race downhill!

Both work as half-day activities.

Horseback Riding on Vitosha

20 minutes from Sofia

This one is easy to underestimate. Dragalevtsi Horse Base sits at the edge of Vitosha, which means the trails go through actual mountain forest - waterfalls, scenic rocks, panoramic views over Sofia. Rides run from 1 to 4 hours. Beginners are led by a handler on foot, experienced riders follow a guide on their own route.

The 2-hour tour with the waterfall stop is the sweet spot for first-timers. Also one of the few activities on this list that works well with children.

Duration: 1-4 hours | 20 min from Sofia center | Beginners and kids welcome

Paintball on Vitosha Mountain

Sofia — Vitosha foothills

Were you really ever in your twenties if you never splattered a fat ball of paint right on your friend's chest? We promise you - it's way more satisfying than it sounds! The outdoor paintball site sits at the edge of Vitosha, which means you're playing in actual forest rather than a warehouse with inflatable obstacles. Groups of 6 or more. Equipment included.

Standard stuff done in a good location. Popular for stag parties and corporate groups who've run out of patience for team-building workshops.

Luxury Yacht Tour on Iskar Dam

30 minutes from Sofia

Not everything on this list has to spike your cortisol. The Iskar Dam is half an hour from Sofia and looks nothing like what you'd expect to find this close to a capital city. The 40-minute cruise takes you past Shipochen Bay - a protected area with wild horses, deer, and apparently bears (seen from a safe distance on a boat, which is the right distance). Up to 10 people, professional skipper, insurance included.

Available June-September, mostly weekends. Good for couples, families, or as a warm-down after a more intense day.

How to choose

If you've never done any of this before and want to do one thing: the balloon bungee is the standout. It's our most popular service for a reason. The cave bungee is second if you want something more dramatic on the ground. Rafting is the right call for groups who want a full day rather than a 15-minute experience.

If you're building a stag weekend or a full day of activities, rafting in the morning and paintball in the afternoon works well as a combination — both accessible from Sofia and neither requires you to be fit. Add the yacht for a sunset wind-down and you have a complete day.

For summer visitors: canyoning is the hidden gem on this list. Most tourists never find it. That's why we're telling you.

We coordinate all of these directly. Most can be booked with 24–48 hours notice. WhatsApp is the fastest way to confirm availability: +359 886 631 723

FAQ

Do I need experience for any of these?

No. Every activity on this list is designed for first-timers. Instructors are included across the board.

What's the age limit for bungee jumping?

16 years minimum for the cave bungee, with a parent present for anyone under 18. The balloon bungee has the same restriction.

Can I book same-day?

Sometimes, but not reliably - especially for bungee and balloon activities which depend on weather and group schedules. Book at least 24 hours ahead to guarantee a spot.

Which is better - cave bungee or balloon bungee?

Different experiences. The cave is more dramatic visually. The balloon is more disorienting because there's no reference point - just sky, fields, and silence before you go. If you can only do one, the balloon.

Is canyoning suitable for non-swimmers?

The instructors will assess this on-site. Life jackets are provided and the sections are manageable, but mention it when booking so they can advise.

Is the yacht tour suitable for children?

Yes - it's one of the most family-friendly options on the list. Calm water, professional skipper, life jackets included.
