Standard, technical or night?

The standard route is the one most people should book. It climbs 16 km to the ridge of Stara Planina in an hour, the guide sets the pace for the group, and two people can share one snowmobile. The technical master class is 18 km in an hour and a half through a snow maze at the foot of Kom peak: steep climbs and descents, deep drifts and a crossing of the Ginska river. You ride it alone and you come back knowing how to handle the machine on hard ground. The night snowmobile ride follows the standard route after dark on Saturdays, a calmer ride through the forest with short stops for a drink and a snack. If you have ridden before and want more, the 3-hour ride heads towards Kom peak.

The trails and safety

There are two trails, each 3 metres wide and groomed with a PistenBully 25 piste machine, the same kind used at ski resorts. Before you set off the guide gives everyone a safety briefing and shows first-timers how the snowmobile works. You ride in a column with about 20 metres between machines, the guide leads from the front, and overtaking or leaving the trail is not allowed. Accident insurance is included in the price of the standard, technical and night rides. Rides only go ahead when there is enough snow.

What to wear

Ski clothes or warm winter layers, high winter boots and warm gloves. A scarf or face mask helps against the powder snow. Bring your own helmet and ski goggles if you have them; if not, you get them on site. A new helmet liner costs about €1.

How long to allow

Plan on about an hour to drive from Sofia to Petrohan, then 1 to 3 hours on the snowmobile depending on the route, plus the briefing. With hotel pick-up, most standard rides fit into half a day.

FAQ

Do I need experience to ride a snowmobile?+
No, not for the standard route. The guide gives you a full briefing and shows you how the snowmobile works, and the pace is set for the group. The technical route and the 3-hour ride are better for people who have ridden before or are confident on rough ground.
Which ride should I choose?+
For most people the 1-hour standard snowmobile tour is the right choice: scenic, manageable and still a real thrill. Pick the technical master class for steep slopes, snowdrifts and a river crossing, the night ride for the forest after dark, or the 3-hour ride if you are an experienced rider.
Can two people share one snowmobile?+
Yes, on the standard route two people can ride one snowmobile for €123 in total. The technical route, the night ride and the 3-hour ride are solo only.
How old do I need to be?+
16 or older. Riders under 18 need to come with an adult or bring a declaration signed by a parent or guardian.
What should I wear?+
Ski clothes or warm winter layers, high boots, warm gloves and a scarf or face mask. A helmet and goggles are provided if you do not have your own.
What if there is not enough snow?+
Rides only run when there is enough snow at Petrohan. We check conditions before your date, and if the ride cannot go ahead because of snow or weather, you choose a new date or a full refund.
When is the season and what time do rides start?+
The snowmobile season at Petrohan runs from December to March, depending on snow. The standard route starts at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30, the technical route and the 3-hour ride at 14:00, and the night ride at 20:00 on Saturdays.
Is it good for groups?+
Yes. The standard route takes up to 5 riders at a time and the technical route up to 10. Bigger groups can be arranged in advance, so message us with your numbers and dates.
How far is Petrohan from Sofia?+
About 55 km north of Sofia, around an hour by car. We send you the exact meeting point when we confirm, or pick you up from your hotel from €160 per car, return with waiting.
Is a ski-doo safari the same as a snowmobile tour?+
Yes. Ski-Doo is a snowmobile brand, and many people use the name for any snowmobile, so a ski-doo safari, a snowmobile tour and a snowmobile ride in Bulgaria all mean the same thing here.
Is insurance included?+
Yes, for the standard, technical and night rides accident insurance is included in the price, together with the snowmobile, fuel, guide and briefing. The 3-hour ride includes the snowmobile, fuel, guides and briefing.
Can I change or cancel my booking?+
Cancel at least 48 hours before your ride for a full refund. Later cancellations and no-shows are non-refundable. If the ride is cancelled because of snow or weather, you choose a new date or a full refund.
How do I pay?+
Nothing to pay to check dates and snow. Once your ride is confirmed, we send you a secure card payment link, and full payment secures your place.
