"Great place. We started with the tasting and had a tour afterwards. A little meze plate of cheeses, tomatoes and local meats was a great addition to the rakia… We were given a complimentary shot of rakia at the end of the tour."

"We chose different sets and enjoyed them outside in the garden. We learned a lot about rakia in a short time thanks to the tasting and the guided tour. The staff were very friendly, helpful and keen to bring rakia closer to us."

Rakia Museum Sofia is the first rakia museum in the city: a small, friendly museum and tasting room on Patriarh Evtimiy Boulevard, three minutes from the metro. A guide walks you through how Bulgaria's national spirit is made and why it matters here, among old copper stills and bottles from Bulgaria and around the world. Then you taste: three classic, fruit or aged rakias with Bulgarian appetisers, three rakia cocktails, or the VIP selection of rare bottles. Tickets cost from €20, and there is an alcohol-free visit with homemade lemonade for €9.

What is rakia?

Rakia is a fruit brandy and Bulgaria's national drink. It is distilled most often from plums or grapes, but also from apricots, quince and other fruit, and many families still make their own every autumn. Bulgarians sip it slowly from small glasses, usually at the start of a meal with a salad, rather than knocking it back as a shot.

At the museum you see the stills and the old ways of making it, hear where the best rakia comes from, and taste the difference for yourself: a young classic rakia, a fruit rakia, one aged in oak, or rakia cocktails such as a Rakia Negroni, a Cherry Chill and a Rose Fizz with Bulgarian rose liqueur.

A good plan for a rainy afternoon

Most of the visit is indoors, with a leafy courtyard for sunny days, so the Rakia Museum is one of the easier things to do in Sofia in the rain. It is a small, personal place rather than a big gallery: the guided tour and the tasting are the heart of it, and many guests stay on for another drink afterwards.

It suits couples, friends on a weekend away and colleagues after work. With the lemonade ticket, people who do not drink can come along on the same tour.
