Where to eat in Sofia when you want Bulgarian food with some character: five traditional restaurants in the centre, plus three tastings for an afternoon or the start of a night out. Every booking goes through one WhatsApp message to a real person.

Chevermeto at NDK has a live folk show every evening from 20:00 (programme fee €4.50 per person). Hadjidraganovite Kashti, four houses from 1866, and Hadjidraganovite Izbi, an old stone wine cellar off Vitosha Blvd, have live folk music most evenings. Izbata Tavern near Alexander Nevsky and Izbata Tavern 2 with its covered garden are quieter taverns with recipes from all over Bulgaria. Most guests spend €20 to €35 each. The Rakia Museum runs guided tours with tastings every day from 12:30 to 19:00, from €20 (an alcohol-free visit is €9). The wine tasting pours five Bulgarian wines with cheese and bread for €30 per person, and the whiskey tasting at Bar Caldo starts at €54 for the group. Tastings are for guests aged 18 and over and are paid in full by card once we confirm your time.
