With 48 hours in Sofia, spend day one in the centre: a walk past Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Rotunda of St George, the Roman ruins of Serdika and Vitosha Boulevard, then the Museum of Illusions or the Rakia Museum, and dinner with a live folk show. On day two, choose between culture and adrenaline: a Rila Monastery day trip (€30) or an ATV ride or shooting range in the morning. End with a hammam, a Bulgarian wine tasting (€30) and a night out.

💬 Plan my 48 hoursSofia is small, walkable and cheap by European standards. The airport is close: the metro reaches the centre in about 20 minutes, and a pre-booked driver can meet you at arrivals. Our airport guide compares metro, taxi and transfer, and the getting around guide covers the rest.
Morning: the classic walk
Start at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the gold domes on every postcard. Walk past the National Assembly to the Presidency, and step into the courtyard behind it for the Rotunda of St George, the oldest building in the city. Below the Largo, the Serdika ruins show the Roman streets under your feet, and they are free to walk through.
Stop for a banitsa with ayran, the local breakfast, then walk down Vitosha Boulevard with the mountain in front of you. Two hours, zero euro, and you've seen the heart of Sofia.
Afternoon: something different (read our Museum of Illusions review first)
Evening: dinner with a show
Option A: culture. Rila Monastery is the most important sight in Bulgaria, hidden in the mountains 120 km south of Sofia. A guided day trip takes care of transport and the story behind the frescoes.
Option B: adrenaline. If churches aren't your thing, spend the morning in the hills outside the city instead. You're back in the city by lunch.
Other good mornings: the shooting range, karting or an escape room.
Afternoon: recover
Night: go out

Yes for the centre and one day trip. The main sights are within a 20 minute walk of each other, so one day covers the city and the second day can go to Rila Monastery or the mountain.
With only two days, Rila Monastery is the easier choice: it's a full day with transport organised. Plovdiv is worth its own day if you have three.
Apart from the hotel, plan about €100 to €200 per person for two days: a transfer, a museum, a dinner with a show, one bigger activity and a night out.
For Rila, the folk show dinner, ATV and the wine tasting, yes: a few days ahead on weekends. Walking the centre needs nothing.
