Quick answer

Rafting means paddling an inflatable boat down rapids as a team: the Struma River near Sofia, about 3 hours on the water, €40. Canyoning means going through a river gorge on foot, sliding down rock chutes and jumping into pools: the Vlahi River, 3 to 4 hours, €45. For speed and teamwork, raft. To climb, slide and jump, go canyoning. If you can't decide, do both in one day for €55. For families with young kids, the gentler Iskar Gorge rafting (€40) is an hour from Sofia.

Two ways to get soaked in the same gorge

People ask us this every week in summer: rafting or canyoning? Both happen around the Kresna Gorge, about 90 minutes south of Sofia, both need zero experience, and you'll be wet either way. But they feel completely different.

Rafting is a boat, a team and a river doing most of the work. Canyoning is your own body, a wetsuit and a gorge you get through by sliding, jumping and scrambling. Here's how to choose.

Rafting: speed, noise and teamwork

A team in an inflatable boat, an instructor at the back shouting commands, and 8 to 12 km of river. On the Struma, spring (March to June) brings high water, big waves and fast current. In summer the river gets lower and more technical, with rocks and drops to steer through.

You sit, you paddle, you get splashed. It's loud, social and easy for anyone who can hold a paddle. It suits groups, stag and hen parties, team building and people who'd rather not jump off anything.

Canyoning: slide, jump, swim

No boat. You walk into the Vlahi River gorge in a wetsuit and helmet and follow the water down: smooth rock slides, jumps into deep green pools, narrow passages and small waterfalls. It's more physical and more hands-on than rafting, and every jump is optional.

It's slower and quieter too. You spend 3 to 4 hours inside a canyon most visitors to Bulgaria never see. It suits couples, friends who like a challenge and families with active kids.

If the Struma sounds like too much, the Iskar Gorge is the answer. It's only an hour from Sofia, the rapids are gentler, there are calm stretches where you can swim, and no swimming skills are needed.

FAQ

What's the difference between canyoning and rafting?

Rafting is paddling an inflatable boat down river rapids as a team. Canyoning is moving through a river gorge on foot: sliding down rocks, jumping into pools and swimming, without a boat.

Which is more dangerous?

Neither is dangerous with a certified instructor and proper gear, which are always included. Rafting feels more intense in spring when the water is high. In canyoning every jump is optional.

Do I need to swim?

Not for rafting: the life jacket keeps you afloat and no swimming skills are needed. For canyoning you'll be in the water a lot, so being comfortable in water helps, though you also wear a life jacket.

Can kids do it?

Yes. The Iskar Gorge rafting is made for families with children, and the Vlahi canyoning suits beginners and kids who are comfortable in water. Tell us the ages and we'll recommend the right one.

When is the season?

Struma rafting runs March to October, the combo May to October, and Vlahi canyoning June to October. Iskar rafting runs April to October.

Boat or canyon? Ask us.

Send the date, the group and whether you need a transfer. We'll confirm the slot and the water conditions, usually within minutes.
