The four best adrenaline activities near Sofia: a bungee jump from a hot air balloon 100 metres up (€70), white-water rafting on the Struma River (€40, spring to autumn), an ATV off-road ride in the mountains 30 minutes from the city (from €60) and a sunrise balloon flight (from €50). None of them needs experience, and hotel pick-up is available for all four.
Not sure which one? Tell us the date, how many of you and how brave you feel. We'll suggest the right one and book it.
💬 Help me chooseMost people arrive expecting churches, museums and communist-era buildings. They find all that, plus mountains that start half an hour from the centre and a river gorge an hour and a half south. That's why the best adrenaline near Sofia is a short drive, not a weekend trip.
Most bungee jumps are off a bridge or a crane. This one isn't: you rise 100 metres in the basket of a tethered balloon, then step off. The balloon stays anchored the whole time, but the height, the open sky and the view of the mountains make it feel nothing like a fixed platform.
Jumps happen at sunrise near the village of Dragovishtitsa, about 30 minutes from Sofia, because the air is calmest early in the morning. Certified instructors check every piece of gear before each session, the weight limit is 115 kg, and every jump is filmed in 4K. Places per day are limited, so book at least 48 hours ahead, more for weekends.
The Struma River runs south from Sofia through the Kresna Gorge: steep limestone walls, forest and long stretches of rapids. It's the classic rafting trip in Bulgaria, and it works for first-timers because every raft has a certified guide and you get a wetsuit, helmet and life jacket.
Spring brings high water and bigger waves; summer is lower and more technical. The base has a riverside bar and grill, so the day doesn't end when you get out of the water. Torn between rafting and canyoning? Read canyoning vs rafting.
About 30 minutes from Sofia, around the village of Mirovyane, the trails climb through forest to open ridges with 360-degree mountain views. You ride a full-size 4x4 quad, a guide leads the way and adjusts the route to the group, and no driving licence is needed. More in our ATV guide.
Not all adrenaline is about speed. A balloon flight is slow and silent, and the rush comes from the height and the light. Flights take off at sunrise from the same area as the balloon bungee, from a 10-minute tethered lift to a full 30-minute flight, filmed in 4K.
For speed, see our go karting guide, which also covers the UTV buggy, the drift hovercraft and waterjets. For the outdoor shooting range with AK-47 and sniper packages, read the shooting range guide. Summer water sports are in water sports near Sofia.
The bungee jump from a hot air balloon, 100 metres up at sunrise. For a longer adrenaline day, Struma rafting or an ATV ride.
No. All four are for beginners, with instructors or guides and all the gear included.
Yes, for all four. The balloon, bungee and ATV are about 30 minutes away; rafting on the Struma is about 90 minutes.
At least 24 to 48 hours. For weekends and the balloon bungee, earlier is better.
Tell us the date and your group. We'll book it and sort the transport.
💬 Book my adventureI've been sending people off balloons, down rivers and up mountain trails around Sofia since 2018. These four are the ones they talk about for years.
