Book on WhatsAppZipline in Bulgaria, about 90 minutes south of Sofia: clip in, step off and fly 100 metres over the Struma river. Before the zipline comes a rope garden on two levels, a warm-up about a metre off the ground and then the high level at around 5 metres, 24 elements in all, with bridges, nets and beams. You need no experience, a safety briefing comes first, and it costs €20 per person with all the gear, from one person. The base is in the Kresna Gorge, so the zipline fits easily into the same day as rafting or canyoning.
Check dates on WhatsAppThe zipline is about 100 metres long and starts above the Struma river. You hang in a harness, the pulley does the work, and for around a minute there is nothing below you but water and rock. It is the last thing you do, after the rope garden, so you finish on a high.
Level 1 sits about a metre off the ground, a warm-up to get used to the harness and the balance, although a few of its elements are harder than they look. Level 2 is around 5 metres up, with 24 elements of different difficulty, from wobbly bridges to nets and beams. It is a proper workout, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and bring gloves if you like.
Rafting on the Struma (€40) and canyoning on the Vlahi river (€45) start from the same base, so you can do the river in the morning and the zipline in the afternoon. It also works after rafting and canyoning at Kazanite (€55). The rope garden and zipline are €20 on top, and on a day like this a transfer from Sofia is worth it. Near the base there is also paintball, air rifle and bow shooting, and a short walk up to the chapel of St Mina, with a view over the river and the start of the Kresna Gorge.
