Founded in the 10th century and set deep in the Rila Mountains at 1,147 metres above sea level, Rila Monastery is Bulgaria's most visited and most beloved landmark. Perched quietly on Sofia's outskirts, this small medieval chapel contains something remarkable: 13th-century frescoes of extraordinary realism and emotional depth — painted in 1259, nearly 50 years before Giotto began the Italian Renaissance. The figures are not icons. They are human. The expressions are grief, tenderness, dignity. Boyana Church is one of the finest examples of medieval European art, and most visitors have never heard of it before they arrive.

Are entry fees included?
No — entry to Boyana Church (~€5) and Rila Monastery Museum (~€4) are paid separately on the day. The audio guide (€5) is also optional and paid on-site.
What should I wear to the monastery?
Rila Monastery has a strict dress code — no shorts, short skirts, flip-flops or bare shoulders. Scarves are available to rent for €2 if needed. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended.
Can I bring children?
Yes — children are welcome and pay the same price (€35). Infants must have their own seat. Child safety seats are available as an extra (€5 each) — mention this when booking.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation if you cancel at least 1 day before the tour date.
