A gyrocopter, or autogyro, looks like a small helicopter but flies differently. The rotor on top is not driven by the engine: the airflow turns it as the propeller at the back pushes the aircraft forward, and the spinning rotor gives the lift. Because the rotor keeps turning on its own, the pilot can bring the aircraft down under control even without engine power. The Auto Gyro Cavalon has an enclosed cockpit with two seats side by side, so you sit next to your instructor with a wide view ahead.
This is more than a passenger ride. After a short briefing on the ground, your instructor takes off and, once you are in the air, hands you the controls for part of the flight. You steer the gyrocopter yourself while the instructor keeps watch and takes over whenever needed. The route and altitude are set on the day by the weather and your wishes, with views over Sofia, the Balkan range and the Iskar Gorge. Each flight takes one flyer, so friends fly one after another.
For a longer trip, the Rila Lakes flight leaves from the same airfield and heads south over the Sofia plain and the foothills of Rila to the Seven Rila Lakes, then back.
