TripAdvisor

"I had no idea Sofia had a proper mountain on its doorstep. The guide was fantastic — knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and local history. We reached Cherni Vrah and the views were extraordinary. A completely different side of Sofia that most tourists never see."

Sofia is one of the only capitals in Europe with a proper mountain on its doorstep. Vitosha Nature Park begins where the city ends — and at its summit stands Cherni Vrah, 2,290 metres above sea level. A loop trail from Aleko Hut takes you across alpine meadows, stone rivers, the Torfeno Branishte Peat Reserve, and past views stretching to the Rila Mountains and the Balkans. Along the way: Vitosha Tulips, wild orchids, Balkan Chamois, Roe Deer, and high-mountain birds. A private minibus picks you up in central Sofia and brings you back. Your guide handles everything else.

⛰️ The Route: Aleko to Cherni Vrah and Back

Starting at Aleko Hut (1,750m), the loop trail first traverses the foot of Golyam Rezen and Malak Rezen peaks — a particularly scenic stage with constant views over Sofia, the Balkan Mountains, and the Rila summits in the far distance. You reach Cherni Vrah (2,290m) for a well-deserved rest and 360-degree panorama. The descent passes through the Torfeno Branishte Peat Reserve — one of the most unusual landscapes in Bulgaria — before returning to Aleko Hut.

🌿 Wildlife & Flora

The alpine zone of Vitosha is home to the elusive Balkan Chamois and herds of Roe Deer. High-mountain birds provide a constant soundtrack. Along the trail you'll find the rare Vitosha Tulip and various wild orchids — plants that exist almost nowhere else. Your guide knows where to look and what you're looking at.

 FAQ+
How fit do I need to be?
The route is moderate — no technical climbing or steep scrambling. If you can walk for 5–6 hours at a comfortable pace and handle some elevation, you'll manage well. The key is proper footwear and not rushing. Your guide sets a pace that works for the group.
Is food available on the mountain?
Yes — there are a few huts along the route serving basic food (beans soup, meatballs, chips, tea, pancakes). However, we recommend bringing a packed lunch and snacks so you can stop wherever you like along the trail.
What if the weather is bad?
Mountain weather can change quickly. Afternoon showers are possible even in summer — bring a rain jacket. If conditions make the hike unsafe, we'll contact you to reschedule. Free cancellation is available up to 1 day before.
Is this really a private tour?
Yes — completely private. The minibus and guide are exclusively for your group. You won't be joined by other travellers. The pace, stops, and experience are entirely yours.
