"€9.20 for the most immersive experience you can have in Sofia… The audio guide in Italian is very well made and lasts about an hour. You will be able to treat the house as if it were your own and even try out bikes and clothes."

The Red Flat Sofia is a small interactive museum in a flat in central Sofia, set up as the home of an ordinary Bulgarian family in the 1980s, the last decade of communism. Four rooms are filled with furniture and objects from the time, and you are allowed to touch all of it: open the cupboards, dial the rotary phone, leaf through the magazines. An audio guide in five languages tells the family’s story as you go. The visit takes about 1.5 hours and an adult ticket is €9.20. Message us and we send you the booking link, then help you plan the rest of your day.

A 1980s home you are allowed to touch

The flat recreates the home of an average family in the days of Reagan and Gorbachev. In the living room you sit at the dining table and hear about working abroad, Radio Free Europe and the satirical newspaper Sturshel, try the rotary phone and taste something typical of the era. Then come the kitchen, the children’s room full of old toys and the rest of the home, each with its own short stories in the audio guide. It is a very personal way into Sofia communist history: work and school, holidays and parties, what people ate and what they watched on TV.

Because everything can be handled, The Red Flat Sofia works for history fans, couples and families alike. This communist apartment in Sofia is also one of the easiest answers to what to do in Sofia on a rainy day: it is indoors, in the centre, and an hour and a half passes quickly. Photos for personal use are welcome; longer videos need the museum’s permission.

We send the link and plan the rest of your day

The Red Flat runs its own bookings, so we do not sell the ticket: you book and pay on The Red Flat’s own booking page; we send you the link. What we add is everything around it. Tell us when you want to go and we send the right link, then suggest what fits before or after, from a rakia tasting a few streets away to a Bulgarian dinner with a folk show or a trip out of the city the next day.

It is the same WhatsApp chat for all of it, with real people on the other end, 24/7. If you are in Sofia for a few days, we can plan the whole trip so you just turn up.

FAQ

How much are The Red Flat Sofia tickets?+
An adult ticket is €9.20 and includes the audio guide. Children up to 14 have their own ticket type, and you see its price on The Red Flat’s booking page.
How do I book through SoFun?+
Send us a message on WhatsApp with the day and the number of people. We reply with the booking link: you book and pay on The Red Flat’s own booking page; we send you the link.
Do I need to book in advance?+
It is not required, but it is a good idea. The flat takes only a few people at a time and fills up at busy times. Without a booking you can buy a ticket at the GIFTED shop with cash or card if there is space.
Is The Red Flat a communism museum?+
Not a classic one. Instead of display cases, you walk through a furnished family home and hear what everyday life under communism was like, which many visitors find more personal than a communism museum in Sofia with exhibits behind glass.
How long does the visit take?+
About 1.5 hours if you listen to the whole audio guide. Some guests take a little less, some stay longer.
Which languages is the audio guide in?+
English, Italian, French, Spanish and Bulgarian.
C’è l’audioguida in italiano all’appartamento rosso di Sofia?+
Is it a good visit with children?+
Yes. Kids enjoy that they can open drawers, play with the old toys and try things out. Children up to 14 have their own ticket type on the booking page.
What do The Red Flat reviews say?+
Most guests mention the audio guide, the amount of detail and the fact that everything can be touched. A few say the flat gets busy at peak times, which is why booking a time slot helps.
What if we are late for our time slot?+
The museum cannot promise immediate entry, and you may have to wait for the next free slot.
Is the flat accessible for wheelchair users?+
No. Like many buildings in central Sofia, the building is not accessible for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility.
Is there parking nearby?+
The street is in the paid blue zone and spaces are hard to find. Walking, the metro to Serdika or a tram is easier.
