Quick answer
For traditional Bulgarian food in Sofia, eat at a mehana, a Bulgarian tavern. Plan on €20 to €35 per person for a full meal with drinks. Order a shopska salad, a clay-pot kavarma or grilled kebapche, and a rakia or local wine. For atmosphere, pick a place with live folk music: some play Wednesday to Sunday, and one does a full folk show every evening from 20:30. The five taverns below are the ones we send our own guests to.

What to order
Bulgarian food is hearty, fresh and cheap by European standards. A few dishes you shouldn't leave without trying:
Shopska salad
Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and a snow of grated white cheese. The national starter, best with a cold rakia
Tarator
Cold yogurt soup with cucumber, dill and walnuts. A summer classic
Kavarma
Meat and vegetables slow-cooked in a clay pot, served bubbling
Kebapche and kyufte
Grilled minced-meat sausages and patties, usually with chips and lyutenitsa
Sirene po shopski
White cheese baked in a clay pot with egg and peppers
Banitsa
Filo pastry with cheese. Breakfast, with a glass of ayran
Rakia
Fruit brandy, sipped slowly with the salad, not shot

How not to overpay
Most places are honest, but a few habits help. Menus often list portion weights in grams, so check what you're getting. Bread and some sides can be charged separately. Ask for the bill itemised if a number looks off, and pay by card when you can. Tipping around 10% is normal for good service. Our Sofia safety guide covers the rare menu tricks in more detail.
Curious about what you're drinking? Try a Bulgarian wine tasting (€30) or the Rakia Museum (from €20) before dinner. And after, our nightlife guide takes it from there.
