🥃 What is Rakia?

Rakia is Bulgaria's national spirit — a fruit brandy distilled from plums, grapes, apricots, quince, or cherries, depending on the region. It predates wine culture in the Balkans, and in Bulgarian homes it's the drink that opens every table, marks every celebration, and accompanies every meal. To understand rakia is to understand a significant part of Bulgarian daily life. The museum doesn't just show you bottles — it explains why this particular drink became the backbone of a culture.

🏛️ The Museum Experience

The Rakia Museum is smaller than you might expect — and more intimate than most Sofia attractions. A QR-based audio guide walks you through the collection of bottles, distillation equipment and artifacts. The tasting follows at your own pace, with Bulgarian appetizers included in every experience above entrance only. Reviewers consistently mention the quality of the guides and the fact that you're treated as a guest rather than a tourist. The garden seats up to 50 people and is a pleasant surprise. Plan for about 45–50 minutes.

🍽️ Lunch & Dinner Options

For groups of 15 or more, the museum offers a full Tour with Lunch (€40) or an Evening Dinner (€50). The lunch includes traditional Bulgarian dishes — salad, meatballs, kebab, homemade sausage and bread. The dinner runs from 19:00 to 22:00 and can substitute rakia with Bulgarian wine on request.
