🍷 The Five Wines
Each wine is poured into a single glass — served in order of increasing intensity and complexity, so your palate builds through the experience:
🌸 Misket
Bulgaria's most distinctive white — floral, aromatic, with a dry finish. Grown in the Rose Valley and Sungurlare regions. Often the first wine guests fall in love with.
🏔️ Melnik
From the Struma Valley near the Greek border — deep ruby, rich and structured. One of Bulgaria's oldest wine regions. Winston Churchill reportedly ordered Melnik wine by the barrel.
🍇 Mavrud
The king of Bulgarian red varieties — grown exclusively around Plovdiv. Bold, tannic, with dark fruit and a long finish. Once reserved for Bulgarian royalty.
🌿 Gumza
A lighter, more elegant red from the Danube Plain — smooth tannins, red fruit, and a refreshing acidity. Often compared to Pinot Noir by those who discover it for the first time.
🔴 Rubin
A Bulgarian cross between Nebbiolo and Syrah — created in 1944 and found nowhere else in the world. Full-bodied, with complex spice and dark cherry. The finale of the tasting.
🧀 The Cheese & Bread
The wines are accompanied by a selection of local Bulgarian cheeses — including white brine cheese and yellow cheese from different regions — paired with artisanal bread and still mineral water. The food isn't an afterthought: it's chosen to complement each wine and give your palate the right foundation throughout the tasting.
🏛️ The Setting
The tasting takes place in one of Sofia's finest boutique wine shops — located on a quiet artsy street in the city centre, just steps from Vitosha Boulevard and walking distance from the main sights. For larger groups, the session moves to a specially equipped multimedia hall nearby, which can accommodate up to 30 people in the same intimate format. The exact location is shared when you book.
🌍 Bulgaria's Secret Wine History
Wine has been made in Bulgaria for over 5,000 years — longer than in France, Italy or Spain. Yet Bulgarian wine has remained largely unknown internationally, partly due to decades of communist-era mass production that suppressed boutique craftsmanship. Today, a new generation of small producers is changing that: focusing on indigenous varieties, terroir-driven winemaking, and quality over volume. This tasting is an introduction to that story — and to wines you simply cannot find anywhere else.
