🚗 What is a Trabant?

The Trabant — or Trabi — was the most common car in communist East Germany and one of the defining objects of the Eastern Bloc. Produced from 1957 to 1990, it had a two-stroke engine, a body made partly from cotton waste and phenol resin, and a waiting list of up to 13 years. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, hundreds of thousands of East Germans drove their Trabants west. Today it's one of the most recognizable symbols of the communist era — and arriving in one is the best possible introduction to Sofia.
