"The Red Flat is an absolute must see in Sofia. It brings you back to a flat of an ordinary Bulgarian family in the 1980s in socialist Bulgaria. The audio tour tells the exact story of how daily life was. Very educational — we learned a lot from this visit. We thoroughly enjoyed it and can recommend anyone visiting Sofia to pay a visit."

Step through a real front door into a real apartment — and into 1980s Bulgaria. The Red Flat is not a museum in the conventional sense. It is an authentic Communist-era home, preserved with the actual furniture, objects, and sounds of the period, where you are invited to open every cupboard, handle every object, and listen to the story of an ordinary Bulgarian family navigating life during the Cold War. Ranked #3 of 331 things to do in Sofia and a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice 2026 winner, it is consistently described as one of the most memorable and personal experiences in the city.

🏠 A Real Apartment, Not a Reconstruction
The Red Flat is a genuine apartment on the third floor of a Soviet-era residential building — not a purpose-built museum space. The rooms are arranged exactly as a Bulgarian family would have lived in the 1980s: the living room with its rotary-dial telephone and state-run TV listings, the kitchen with its Перла washing machine and Мраз refrigerator, the children’s room with its Балканче bicycle and school report cards, the bathroom and balcony. Every object is authentic. Nothing is behind glass. You are invited to open every drawer, every cabinet, every door.
🎧 The Audio Guide — Elena, Plamen & Boyan
The experience is built around a single family: Elena, Plamen, and their son Boyan. The audio guide — available in five languages — narrates their lives as you move through the apartment. You hear about ration cards and radio broadcasts from Radio Free Europe, about school brigades and summer holidays, about forbidden literature hidden in plain sight and the everyday compromises of life under a one-party state. The full audio guide runs approximately 1.5 hours. Most visitors say they listened to every word.
