⛪ Bulgaria's Most Sacred Place

Founded in the first half of the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila — spiritual protector of the Bulgarian people — the Rila Monastery has survived fires, invasions, and centuries of change. Nestled between the Rilska and Drushlyavitsa rivers at 1,147 metres above sea level, it remains one of the most important spiritual and literary centres of Bulgarian history, and a living monument to the nation's identity. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

🎨 Frescoes, Towers & Hidden Masterpieces

The main church — the Nativity of the Virgin Mary — is an explosion of colour: arches and ceilings covered in frescoes depicting saints, angels, and biblical stories in kaleidoscopic detail. Nearby stands the Tower of Hrelja, built in 1334, the oldest structure in the complex. And in the monastery museum, you'll find Rafail's Cross — a tiny wooden masterpiece carved over twelve years with more than 600 biblical scenes, each barely visible to the naked eye. The monk who created it lost his sight in the process.

🚐 Effortless from Sofia

Depart at 09:00 from Alexander Nevski Square in a modern, air-conditioned minibus with WiFi. Your English-speaking guide fills the 2-hour drive with stories of Bulgarian history, culture, and what to expect at the monastery. No car, no navigation, no planning — just show up and experience one of the most remarkable places in the Balkans.

🗺️ What You'll See +
⛪ The Nativity of the Virgin Mary Church
The centrepiece of the monastery — arches and ceilings covered in vivid frescoes depicting saints, angels, and biblical narratives. One of the finest examples of Bulgarian National Revival art, striking both inside and out.
🏰 The Tower of Hrelja
The oldest surviving structure in the complex, built in 1334–1335 during the reign of King Stefan Dušan. A medieval fortress tower rising above the monastery's tiled rooftops — its original inscription still visible in the stone.
🏛️ The Monastery Museum
Home to historical exhibits from the 15th to 19th centuries — Bulgarian and foreign art, folk objects, and manuscripts. The centrepiece is Rafail's Cross: a tiny wooden masterpiece carved over 12 years with more than 600 biblical scenes across 36 compositions. The monk who created it lost his eyesight in the process.
🌿 The Monastery Complex & Grounds
Wander the inner courtyard, explore the monastic cells, and take in the surrounding Rila National Park landscape — forested mountains, clean mountain air, and the sound of the Rilska river nearby.
🕐 Free Time
After the guided tour, enjoy free time to explore further, have lunch at one of the nearby restaurants, browse the monastery shop, or simply sit and take it all in.
